Global Running Day – Sonja’s Inspiring Story

For Global Running Day we are celebrating the transformative power of running. For many, running is more than just a form of exercise, it’s a journey of self-discovery, a way to connect with others and a powerful tool to make a difference. Few embody this spirit more than one of our Occupational Health Technicians, Sonja, whose incredible story reminds us of the boundless possibilities that running can unlock.

An Extraordinary Journey

Sonja’s running journey is nothing short of extraordinary. She has completed the gruelling 10 marathons in 10 days challenge not once, but five times, and holds the female record for this achievement. Fittingly, the 10th day of her fifth challenge marked her 100th marathon – a milestone that coincided with her 50th birthday in 2020.

But Sonja didn’t stop there. She decided to take on the ultimate physical and mental trial that year, conquering her fear of open-water swimming to complete:

  • A swim across the length of Windermere
  • A 262-mile cycle around Windermere (10 laps in 24 hours!)
  • 10 marathons in 10 days

Over the years, Sonja has also cycled from Land’s End to John o’ Groats, completed countless fell walks and continues to run marathons, even after undergoing foot reconstruction surgery in 2022.

When she’s not running or fundraising, Sonja enjoys spending time with her daughters and grandsons, exploring the outdoors with her chocolate Labrador and inspiring others to set their own challenges.

The Benefits of Running

Sonja’s story is a testament to the transformative benefits of running, saying “For me, running is a great way to keep fit and healthy, both physically and mentally. It’s a way for me to let off some steam and feel the freedom of the road or trail. It helps clear my mind, a great release for all those stresses of life and tire my choccy lab Baze out. He loves running too. It’s a great way of making friends & enjoying the great outdoors, while strengthening bones, the heart and lungs, and losing weight.”

Whether you’re an experienced marathoner or a beginner lacing up for the first time, running offers something for everyone.

  • Physical Health: Running improves cardiovascular fitness, strengthens muscles and boosts overall health.
  • Mental Wellbeing: From reducing stress and anxiety to increasing confidence and focus, running is a powerful tool for mental health.
  • Community Connection: Running brings people together, creating a sense of belonging and shared purpose.
  • Personal Growth: Setting and achieving running goals helps build resilience, discipline and a sense of accomplishment.
  • Giving Back: Like Sonja, many runners use their passion as a platform to raise awareness and funds for important causes.

We hope Sonja’s story inspires you to take your first, or next step, on your running journey. Whether it’s a short jog around where you live or training for a marathon, running has the power to transform lives.

Thank you, Sonja, for reminding us that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things and that running is so much more than just putting one foot in front of the other.
